Multiple Sclerosis and muscle spasm pain

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition, which can have different forms, offering varying levels of severity

It occurs when the body’s immune system malfunctions and attacks an otherwise healthy part of the body. In the case of MS, this is the brain or spinal cord of the nervous system. The layer that surrounds and protects the nerves, which comes under attack by MS is called the myelin sheath.

The damage to the sheath and underlying nerves means that the messages travelling along the nerves becomes slowed or disrupted. It is as of yet unclear as to exactly what causes the immune system to act in this way, but most experts believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors is involved.

Symptoms of MS

As MS affects the brain and spinal cord and therefore can cause a wide range of potential symptoms, including:

  • Problems with vision, speech, arm or leg movement.
  • Problems with sensation
  • Problems with balance
  • Fatigue
  • Back and neck pain
  • Difficulty walking
  • Numbness or tingling in different parts of the body
  • Problems with bladder control
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms
  • Problems with thinking, learning and planning

MS is a lifelong condition which sometimes causes serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild. In many cases, it can be possible to treat the symptoms. It’s most commonly diagnosed in people in their 20s and 30s, although it can develop at any age. It’s about 2 to 3 times more common in women than men and is one of the most common causes of disability in younger adults

Depending on the type of MS you are diagnosed with, your symptoms may come and go in phases or get steadily worse over time. MS starts in one of two general ways: with individual relapses (attacks or exacerbations) or with gradual progression.

Treating MS

There is currently no known cure for MS, but a number of traditional treatments can control the symptoms, they include:

  • Steroids
  • Disease-modifying therapies and medicines
  • Pain relief
