The menopause

The menopause is a natural part of the ageing process where a woman stops having periods. It usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years old but can vary from person to person. The symptoms of the menopause include hot flushes (usually in the face and neck), night sweats, insomnia, joint pain, muscle pain, anxiety, depression, mood swings and vaginal dryness. Not everyone will experience all of these symptoms and are unique in their response to the menopause. Cannabis medication has been found effective in addressing some of the symptoms of the menopause. At Integro Medical Clinics we offer cannabis medications to those who we feel that their symptoms are severely impacting their quality of life, and who may perhaps wish to avoid hormone replacement therapy at this stage.

How does cannabis medication work?

Each of us have an endocannabinoid system, which is composed of cell receptors located throughout the body that help to maintain homeostasis. These receptors interact with both the cannabinoids that our own bodies produce, as well as to external cannabinoids such as cannabis medications. The hormone oestrogen is important to the endocannabinoid system as it regulates fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which breaks down specific endocannabinoids. If we have a lower or reducing level of oestrogen in our bodies. This can partly explain some of the side effects that are experienced during perimenopause, such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, insomnia and lower libido. Therefore, including a cannabis medication can help to regulate the endocannabinoid system and manage certain symptoms of the menopause, effectively and safely, without the use of HRT or medications if that is not the desired route of management at that time.

How can medical cannabis help with joint and muscle pain, during the menopause?

Cannabis medicines are able to block the transmission of pain messages in nerves running from the brain stem to the pain centres of the brain, to reduce pain. Patients suffering from joint and muscle pain can exhibit a significant reduction in their pain symptoms after being prescribed cannabis medicines. Cannabis medicines are being put forward by medical experts as an alternative to the use of opioids and can help lead to a cumulative relief of pain. This means that fewer opiates are used and the impact of those side effects, associated with opioids are greatly reduced.

When traditional forms of medical treatment are ineffective, cannabis medicines can be an effective alternative form of symptom management, which can offer much needed relief. It not only reduces the symptoms of pain but can help patients to enjoy a far better quality of life during and beyond the menopause, regaining their independence and physical and mental strength.

Am I suitable for medical cannabis for my menopausal symptoms?

The symptoms that you are experiencing will be assessed during a no obligation consultation and examination, here at Integro Medical Clinics. We will identify the type of symptoms you are experiencing and check your medical history, to ensure that cannabis medications will be suitable and safe for you to take. Following this initial assessment, we can provide a plan, which may include cannabis medicines as an option for the management of your menopausal symptoms and will explain the kind of results you can expect, whilst using this medication.

When conventional treatments reach their limit, our work begins.
